About Us
Nestled in San Diego's lovely seaside communities of Point Loma and Ocean Beach, Point Loma High School serves students from the surrounding neighborhoods, as well as students from all across the city. Opened in 1925, Point Loma High School is one of the oldest schools in San Diego, as well as one of the largest high schools in the San Diego Unified School District. Point Loma is a four-year comprehensive public high school offering an abundance of academic courses and excellent extracurricular opportunities to its population of over 2000 students.
During its 90+ years of operation, Point Loma High School has celebrated the arts, including having a thriving music community. Notable PHLS alumni who have gone on to illustrious music careers include Capt. Leo Nicholas Schowengerdt, Jr. ('56), who started the Nitecaps, the US Coast Guard's premiere jazz band; Rick Gerding ('69), who played viola on music projects and film soundtracks, and has worked with Burt Bacharach, Natalie Cole, Elvis Costello, Neil Diamond; Brian Verhoye ('79), a prominent concert pianist in San Diego; Jason Scheff ('80), the bass player and a vocalist for the band "Chicago”; and
Glen Fisher ('82), originator of the San Diego’s First Friday Club of young Point Loma musicians who play locally.
In 2003, the music department suffered some setbacks, including finding themselves without a band director for the school year. More than a decade later, the department has tripled in size, and offers a comprehensive course selection. Find our more about the department's recent history here.
